Every Sydney suburb breaks differently.
Almost every free-to-air channel in this city is transmitted from one place: Artarmon, on the North Shore. Everything you watch leaves that one hill and crosses a harbour, a ridge line of sandstone and a skyline of glass towers before it reaches your roof.
That single quirk of geography is why an antenna that works perfectly in one suburb is useless two suburbs away, and why so much of what gets sold as a fix is the wrong fix entirely. Ray has been reading this city's signal for forty years. Since 1994 he has done it under his own name, which is long enough to name the fault from your description before the van leaves.
Eastern Suburbs
The signal reaches you twice: once direct, once bounced off the water.
Most channels perfect, one or two breaking into blocks. A bigger antenna makes it worse.

The fault is nearly always the forty-year-old coax between the antenna and the TV.
